SMU STUDENT SENATE
Legislative Number: S-103-03 Final Vote:
Authors: Nathan DeVera, et al. Senate Secretary: Will Jones
Dean of Student Life: Dr. Joanne Vogel Student Senate Chair: Will Stovall

A RESOLUTION TO DISSOLVE THE WEBMASTER POSITION FROM THE SMU STUDENT SENATE
WHEREAS currently, the Webmaster position in the SMU Student Senate has been relatively distant in communication and consistent responsibility from the rest of the Senate Body, and
RECOGNIZING that the Webmaster position is a paid ($1,200 per academic year), student-held position while most other SMU Student Senate student-held positions are unpaid, and
ACKNOWLEDGING that the Webmaster position shares numerous overlapping responsibilities with the Student Body Secretary, the Communications Committee, and the SMU IT Office, and
NOTING that in the past, the Student Body Secretary, the Communications Committee, and the SMU IT Office have fulfilled the responsibilities of the Webmaster position without the assistance of him or her, and
RECOGNIZING the importance of the Webmaster’s responsibilities for the smooth continuation of the SMU Student Senate, but also
ACKNOWLEDGING the importance of eradicating redundant responsibilities within the SMU Student Senate to maximize efficiency and minimize confusion,
BE IT THEREFORE that effective January 1, 2017, the Webmaster position, as it
RESOLVED currently stands in the SMU Student Senate and its Constitution and By-Laws, shall be removed entirely, and
BE IT FURTHER that the Communications Committee Chair, if he or she desires,
RESOLVED has the opportunity to add an unpaid Webmaster position within the committee to assume the responsibilities necessary in the coordination and execution of the SMU Student Senate’s online presence.
Respectfully Submitted,
Nathan DeVera
Student Senate Parliamentarian
Blake Rainey
Student Body President
Claire Hermeling
Communications Committee Chair
My thoughts:

This piece of legislation was passed unanimously within the Senate chamber. I chose to vote for this piece because of the reasons listed in the first four paragraphs of the legislation. With these considerations, I believe it to be within the best interest of the students of this University to reallocate the funds that are presently reserved for a redundant position in order to become a more fiscally responsible school.
